倫敦傳媒學院 碩士紀錄片專業校友Max Thurlow入圍葛里爾生獎

為紀念世界著名紀錄片導演約翰葛里爾生的生活及工作,在1972年創建了葛里爾生獎。碩士紀錄片畢業生Max Thurlow通過她的紀錄片《AWA:辛巴威說唱女王》入圍了傑出獎，紀錄片表現了辛巴威說唱歌手準備國家最大嘻哈藝術節演出的全部過程。我們在LCC對MAX進行了採訪，從而更深入的了解其電影及相關經歷。

你怎樣總結這部電影？

《AWA:辛巴威說唱女王》講述了嶄露頭角的新星AWA準備在首都哈拉雷最大嘻哈音樂節登台表演的過程。儘管她來自辛巴威最貧窮的貧民窟，並且面對著很多私人及專業性問題，這部電影探討了AWA是怎樣通過內在積極性和魅力幫助自己獲得成功的故事。

你從哪裡得到靈感來創作《AWA:辛巴威說唱女王的》？

我加入了一個很棒的慈善組織叫「在戰爭的地方」，它在辛巴威的一個小鎮Makakoba舉辦了第一場音樂節。我最初的計劃是記錄下這個音樂節，但我在第一天遇到AWA後，我立即知道我要講述她的故事。

你是怎麼聽說葛里爾生獎的？

我第一次聽說葛里爾生獎是在研究生的時候－它被稱為黃金標準的英國紀錄片獎項。

你認為在創作電影時，你在倫敦傳媒學院碩士紀錄片專業的學習經歷給了你哪些幫助？

學習碩士紀錄片課程對我來說是一個非常好的經歷。在課程開始之前，我只有非常有限的攝影和編輯能力，更不知道如何搭建電影的組織結構。

通過學術和實踐的混合課程學習，我認為自己在這個領域完全可以勝任。並且我非常感謝老師所作的大量工作及努力，從而使這門課程得到了成功。

你未來的計劃是什麼？

我現在是遊走於紀錄片和商業片的自由電影製作人，我計劃繼續提高自己的能力並享受這個過程。我渴望一些合作…

MA Documentary Film alumnus MaxThurlow shortlisted for illustrious Grierson Award

Commemorating the lifeand work of world-renowned documentary filmmaker, John Grierson, the GriersonAward was first set up in 1972.MADocumentary FilmgraduateMax Thurlow was recently shortlisted for the illustrious award with hisdocumentary film,AWA: Zimbabwe』s Rap Queen, featuring the Zimbabwean rap artist preparing for herperformance at the country』s biggest hip hop festival.

We caught up with Maxabout the filmandhis experience at LCC.

How would you summarise thefilm?

AWA: Zimbabwe』s Rap Queentells the story of up-and-coming starlet,AWA, preparing to perform at her country』s biggest hip hop festival Shoko, in the capital Harare. Despite comingfrom one of the poorest ghettos in Zimbabwe and facing numerous personal andprofessional problems, the film explores whether AWA』s innate positivity and charisma is enough to help her succeed.

Where did you get the idea tocreate AWA: Zimbabwe』s Rap Queen?

I joined an amazing charity calledIn Place of Warwho were organising the first musicfestival in a Zimbabwean township called Makakoba. My plan was to document thefestival, but on the first day of my trip I met AWA and immediately knew Iwanted to tell her story.

How did you hear about theGrierson awards?

I first heard about the Grierson Awardsduring my MA–they were mentioned as the gold standardof awards for documentary in the UK.

How did your experience onthe MA Documentary Film course at LCC help when creating the film?

The MA Documentary Film course was a greatexperience. Before I started I had very limited camera or editing skills, andknew even less about how to structure a film.

Through a mixture of academic and practicalclasses I now feel competent in these areas and am very grateful to theteachers for the huge amount of work they put in to make the course a success.

What are your plans for thefuture?

I』m currently freelancing as a filmmakeracross documentary and commercial work and plan to keep honing my skills andenjoying the process. I』m always keen to collaborate…
