Design has become the most influential impulse of today s society. Bloomberg Businessweek China publishes its Design Issue specially every year, consistently compliments what design can achieve. The new comprehensive cultural platform Design Society aims to expand the values of design, and initiates a series of public panels to explore the potentialities of design. The theme of this year s Design Issue is How Design Can Solve Problems. With this panel, we try to discuss more primitive issue beyond what the magzine has told: how can the intentions of designers and the application of designed objects advocate spiritual and social values? During the Shanghai West Bund Art and Design Fair, joining hand with Design Society, Bloomberg Businessweek China invites representatives from academia, design and architectural institutions and investors in business to share their insights about how design can be put into practice and how design changes our daily life.

About the Speakers
HANG Jian
Deputy Dean of Chinese Art Academy (CAA), Hangzhou; Director of Museums of CAA, Professor and Ph.D. supervisor
Hang Jian has been dedicated to craftsmanship and cultural studies, and a pioneer in Chinese Craftsmanship systematic studies, got enrolled with theoretic critics of Chinese contemporary art since 1980s. Hang Jian transferred his research towards historical and theoretic research since 1990s. He proposed to refocus on the relationship between Design and Democracy again and initiated the research and writing of Chinese Design History. He has been contributed to curate important domestic design exhibitions, pushing forward cultural creative industry and Chinese design through curating important international and domestic design exhibitions. Since 2010, from Beijing to Hangzhou, he started to research the relationship between Bauhaus and China, and devoted to the construction of Chinese International Design Museum and Craftsmanship Museum. He is the author of the following publications: Good Will of Design, History of Chinese Craftsmanship, Theoretic History of Chinese Craftsmanship, Thinking of Craftsmanship.
HUA Li
Architect, founder and Chief Architect of Trace Architecture Office
Hua Li received his B. Arch. and M. Arch. from Tsinghua and Yale University. Having practiced in New York, he founded TAO (Trace Architecture Office) in 2009. Hua and TAO have won several architectural awards, including Design Vanguard 2012 by Architectural Record. Their works have been exhibited and published widely. Hua teaches at Tsinghua as a visiting professor and has given lectures in several international
XIA Yan
Executive Director of Zhuyi, Condé Nast Group
Yan Xia is the executive director of Zhuyi, the first internal startup established within Condé Nast Group worldwide. Xia is leading the effort to strategically transform traditional business lines and developing new business models. Zhuyi is a selected service platform of interior designers and architects. Integrating top media resources and riding the wave of consumption upgrade in lifestyle and living sector, Zhuyi aspires to make it easy for Chinese middle class and above to live a life of design, aesthetics and comfort. Xia completed her undergraduate and graduate studies at Tsinghua University and holds an MBA from INSEAD. Previously, Xia worked at McKinsey & Co. and Amazon where she focused on strategy consulting and internet strategy and operations. After joining the Vogue department of Condé Nast in 2012, Xia led her team to complete many innovative projects to digitize the traditional paper media. She started and continues to lead Zhuyi since its inception in 2015.
Jeacy YAN
Partner of IDG
Jeacy Yan focuses on investment in consumer goods & services, retail and e-commerce. Prior to joining IDG, Yan worked at investment banking department of Deutsche Bank Hong Kong Branch where she was involved in many financing transactions of public and private companies. Prior to Deutsche Bank, she worked as bond trader at investment bank department of WestLB New York. Yan held dual M.S. in Industrial Engineering & Management Science and Electrical Engineering from Northwestern University, B.S. in Electrical Engineering and B.A. in Economics from Peking University.
Jamy YANG
Industrial designer, founder of YANG DESIGN, Guest Professor in Tongji University and Nanjing University.
A former employee in Siemens Munich design headquarter, Jamy Yang received master degree of industrial design from Germany with full scholarship of WK Foundation after seven years study in Zhejiang University and China Academy of Art. Yang has received near hundred design awards including Red Dot, iF, G-Mark, IDEA and DFA Silver among others. He was listed in the "Top Influential Chinese Designers" on Forbes. Yang has formed his own design philosophy and become partner with renowned global brands including Boeing, Audi, BMW,Bosch, NATUZZI, Coke Cola, Steelcase, Issey Miyake, Swatch among others. He is also enrolled with a series of CSR projects with NOGs like Green Peace, One Foundation and Animals Asia.
ZHANG Na
Independent Designer, founder and Creative Director of FAKE NATOO and Reclothing Bank
As one of the most representative independent fashion designers in China, Zhang Na founded FAKE NATOO in 2008 and soon after Reclothing Bank in 2011, the later is about using second-hand garments to re-make new designs. In the same year, Reclothing Bank was invited to showcase in Austrian Art Photography Festival. In 2013, Ms. Zhang was listed as one of the Ecological Heroes of China by The Bund. She was also listed in the "Most Creative People in Business 100" (2014) by Fast Company and the "Top 30 Chinese designer" (2015) by Forbes. She received Creative Award by Shanghai Fashion Week and "Top 10 Emerging Chinese Designers" by City Zine.
ZHAO Rong
Programme Director of Design Society
Zhao Rong joined China Merchants Shekou since 2012, she has worked extensively with the company and her colleagues on establishing the partnership with the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A), initiating Design Society as an innovative and comprehensive cultural plaform, in charge of its programming and operation. She graduated from Central Academy of Fine Arts with a B.A., and received two master degrees in Art History successively from Williams College and University of Chicago.
