Dachser s Europe Connection
Dachser s OBOR plans to connect Europe are a watershed in the emerging cross-continent rail logistics service.
China kicked off this year with a bang, waving bon voyage to a 200-container block train as it departed from the coastal industrial and manufacturing power house of Zhejiang Province bound for the far opposite side of Eurasia: London. The rail link bridges an astounding amount of ground, connecting London via Kazakhstan, Russia, Belarus, Poland, Germany, Belgium, France and the English Channel. The feat was heralded by many as a railway marvel.
Soon after, the UK responded in kind, sending its own freight train loaded with UK-made whiskey, soft drinks and other western products in a show of logistics trends to come. Riding on the media fanfare of these demonstrations of OBOR』s connectivity promise, world-leading logistics companies are scrambling to put the finishing touches on their own plans to increase end-to-end rail connections between China and European markets.
German-based Dachser is a leader in this regard. The family owned company, one of the world』s major logistics providers with a staff of 27,500 at over 400 locations worldwide and revenues of €5.7 billion in 2016, has introduced a new weekly LCL (less container load) railway service from China to Europe. This connection promises to extend the novelty of these long-distance connections to daily use, normalizing door-to-door logistics solutions between two continents.
「With capacity constraints a limiting factor, the rail route to Europe has become an integral part of the integrated supply chain in the OBOR equation,」 explains Yves Larquemin, Managing Director of Dachser Air & Sea Logistics (Dachser) North China. 「Rail transport is up to 80% cheaper than air and 10 to 20 days faster than ocean. This internationalizes the supply chain in exciting ways, for instance creating new advantages in serving Poland and Russia.」 Dachser now ships Chinese components to Poland for assembly before reaching European consumers.
Dachser s Edoardo Podesta and Yves Larquemin aredriving forward the OBOR European rail connection.
Rail Rollout
Together with other China developments like a new North China air freight gateway, 「Dachser LCL railway demonstrates how businesses must respond to constantly changing markets and demands in Asia Pacific,」 adds Edoardo Podestá, Managing Director of Dachser Asia Pacific. 「The positive development of our business in the first quarter of this year demonstrates that our efforts have paid off.」
Much of the success can be credited to central China』s emerging connections with Europe, feels Kevin Chen, Managing Director of Dachser South China: 「OBOR gives Western China a real opportunity to develop. Pearl River Delta is the gateway of the Maritime Silk Road for thousands of years, but Chengdu, Chongqing and Changsha have now launched express rail service to Europe.」
Further West, Dachser parallels the central government』s promotion of the Xinjiang OBOR base. 「Before OBOR, we were hardly aware about this province in terms of logistics and trade,」 says Chen. 「Now it』s a very hot topic.」
Handling 80.1 million shipments with a volume of 38.2 million metric tons last year, Dachser uses its own consolidation containers for rail transport between Wuhan/China and Hamburg/Germany. Fixed weekly departures and related upstream and downstream activities follow defined standards and schedules. Dedicated operational teams manage the process, from pre-carriage to final destination. Meanwhile, service desks on both sides of OBOR assure processes run smoothly.
In a wider context, it is clear why China supports such initiatives. The nation』s rail network, especially its modern high-speed network, has become a major source of pride for the country. The 124,000 km rail network, including the largest high-speed network in the world featuring over 22,000 km of track as of last year, shuffles passengers about the cities at lightning speed and is a major contributor to new regional commercial activity.
Currently, China』s large east-west rail trunks serve a passenger transport market comprised of time-sensitive travellers moving toward the high-speed bracket. This puts to good use China』s incredible rail infrastructure by repurposing it for end-to-end logistics links, a natural evolution from a market perspective. Of course, doing this is a challenge. With the likes of Dachser bringing a history of global experience to bear – their slogan being Intelligent Logistics – growth of such end-to-end solutions issure to be robust.
