北京人流量最大的旅遊目的地之一天壇公園此前頻頻遭遇廁紙偷竊。現在，用戶若需使用廁紙，就必須站在一部擁有高清攝像頭的壁掛式機器前。該機器的軟體將記住最近用戶的臉，若同一用戶在固定時間段內再次出現，它將拒絕啟動自動出紙機。

多年來，大量公廁廁紙被一些人拿到家中使用。最近媒體對這一現象進行調查，發現大多數是老年人。此類行為給公廁管理帶來相當沉重的財政負擔。有時，剛補充的一卷新紙幾分鐘內就被拿光，留給其他用戶空紙卷。

面部識別攝像頭要求用戶脫帽、摘掉太陽鏡。這引發有關侵犯個人隱私的擔憂。且識別需要處理時間，這對那些著急使用廁所的人來說頗為不便。

智能廁紙機已在內地社交媒體上引發熱烈討論。大多數人認為偷竊廁紙這種行為應被阻止。但也有少數人覺得公眾沒必要對此過於氣憤。一名微信用戶說：「公廁內的廉價廁紙包含許多有毒材料，如熒光劑等。過度使用只會損害他們的健康。」
