Chapter13 The Deer In The Wood

When Laura and Mary had said their prayers and weretucked(躺進) snugly under the trundle bed s covers, Pa was sitting in the firelight with the fiddle.

勞拉和瑪麗做完禱告，舒舒服服躺進了被窩，爸這時已拿著小提琴坐在火爐前。

Ma hadblown out(吹熄) the lamp because she did not need its light. On the other side of the hearth she was swaying gently in her rocking chair and her knitting needles flashed in and out above the sock she was knitting.

媽不需要燈光，便吹熄了燈，坐在壁爐另一邊的搖椅上輕輕地搖著，棒針在她織著的毛襪上穿來穿去，閃爍著銀色的光芒。

The long winter evenings of fire-light and music had come again.

爐火閃耀著，音樂瀰漫著，漫長的冬天又到來啦。

Pa s fiddlewailed(哀號; 悲嘆) while Pa was singing:

"Oh, Susi-an-na, don t you cry for me, I m going to Cal-i-for-ni-a, The gold dust for to see."

爸唱起了一首感傷的歌，小提琴好像也隨著哀嘆著：

哦，蘇 --- 珊 --- 娜，別為我哭泣啦，

我要到加 --- 利 --- 福 --- 尼 --- 亞，

去尋找那裡的金沙。

Then Pa began to play again the song about Old Grimes. But he did not sing the words he had sung when Ma was making cheese. These words were different.

接著，爸又演唱起老格里姆那首歌來。不過這一次，爸唱的和上次媽做乳酪時唱的不一樣，歌詞完全不同了。

Pa s strong, sweet voice was softly singing:

爸用他那渾厚而甜美的聲音輕輕地唱道：

"Shall auldacquaintance(熟人; 相識) be forgot,

And never brought to mind?

Shall auld acquaintance be forgot,

And the days of auld lang syne?

And the days of auld lang syne, my friend,

And the days of auld lang syne,

Shall auld acquaintance be forgot,

And the days of auld lang syne?"

難道要把老朋友遺忘，

從此再也不曾回想？

難道要把老朋友遺忘，

忘掉昔日那些美好時光？

美好的昔日啊，我的朋友，

美好的昔日，

難道要把老朋友遺忘，

忘掉昔日那些美好時光？

When the fiddle had stopped singing Laura called out softly, "What are days of auld lang syne, Pa?"

當小提琴的樂聲停止時，勞拉輕輕問道：「爸，『昔日』是什麼意思啊？」

"They are the days of a long time ago, Laura," Pa said. "Go to sleep, now."

「就是很久很久以前的日子，勞拉。」爸說，「好啦，快睡吧！」

But Laura lay awake a little while, listening to Pa s fiddle softly playing and to the lonely sound of the wind in the Big Woods.

不過，勞拉沒睡著，她躺在床上，靜靜地傾聽著爸優美的小提琴聲和大森林裡寂寥的風聲。

She looked at Pa sitting on thebench(長凳) by the hearth, the fire-lightgleaming(閃爍) on his brown hair and beard andglistening(閃光, 閃亮) on the honey-brown fiddle. She looked at Ma, gently rocking and knitting.

她看著爸坐在壁爐旁的凳子上，火光在他棕色的頭髮上和鬍鬚上跳躍著，火光把黃色的小提琴照得閃閃發亮。她看著媽，媽坐在搖椅里輕輕地搖著，手中正編織著毛襪。

She thought to herself, "This is now."

勞拉輕輕地告訴自己：「這就是現在。」

She was glad that the cosy house, and Pa and Ma and the fire-light and the music, were now. They could not be forgotten, she thought, because now is now. It can never be a long time ago.

她很高興，這間溫暖舒適的小木屋，爸和媽，火光和琴聲，這些就是「現在」。這一切是永遠無法忘記的。因為「現在」就是「現在」，它永遠永遠不會變成「很久很久以前」。
