Police identify lone suspect in casino hotel attack in Philippines

Philippine police said on Sunday that they have identified the lone suspect who attacked a hotel in Manila on Friday, setting gaming tables alight and leaving 37 others dead in thick smoke.

According to the police, the suspect was a Filipino man.

The suspect, armed with an automatic rifle, stormed the Resorts World Manila around midnight Thursday. He later killed himself.

"He is heavily indebted due to being hooked in casino gambling according to his immediate family," the police said.

Meanwhile, at least one person from the Chinese mainland and four from Taiwan were killed in the attack, the Chinese embassy in the Philippines said on Saturday.

The embassy launched an emergency response mechanism to deal with the aftermath of the incident. Officials have also extended their condolences to victims" families and will offer assistance.
