The kids in Room 207 were misbehaving again.

207教室的孩子們鬧得不可開交。

Spitballs stuck to the ceiling.

沾著唾沫的紙團兒粘到了天花板上。

Paper planes whizzed through the air.

紙飛機在空中飛來飛去。

They were the worst-behaved class in the whole school.

他們是整個學校里表現最差的學生。

"Now settle down," said Miss Nelson in a sweet voice.

「嗨，靜下來。」尼爾森老師的聲音甜甜的。

But the class would not settle down.

不過，學生們可不會馬上安靜下來。

The whispered and giggled.

他們竊竊私語，咯咯怪笑。

They squirmed and made faces.

他們扭來扭去，擠眉弄眼。

They were even rude during story hour.

And they always refused to do their lessons.

"Something will have to be done,"said Miss Nelson.

The next morning Miss Nelson did not come to school.

"Wow!" yelled the kids." Now we can really act up!"

「喲嗬！」孩子們一齊歡呼，「這下我們真的可以玩兒個夠了！」

They began to make more spitballs and paper planes.

他們開始揉更多的唾沫紙團兒，疊更多的紙飛機。

"Today let s be just terrible!" they said.

「今天就讓我們為所欲為吧！」孩子們說道。

"Not so fast!" hissed an unpleasant voice.

「別高興太早了！」一個粗粗的嗓音陰森森地響起來。

A woman in an ugly black dress stood before them.

一個女人站在了他們面前，穿著一件醜陋的黑色連衣裙。

"I am your new teacher, Miss Viola Swamp."

「我是你們的新老師，薇奧拉·斯旺普老師。」

And she rapped the desk with her ruler.

她拿著戒尺啪啪地敲著講台。

"Where is Miss Nelson?" asked the kids.

「尼爾森老師在哪裡？」孩子們問道。

"Never mind that!" snapped Miss Swamp. "Open those arithmetic books!"

「不關你們的事！」斯旺普老師打斷了話頭，「打開數學課本！」

Miss Nelson s kids did as they were told.

尼爾森老師的學生們聽話地照著做了。

They could see that Miss Swamp was a real witch.

他們看得出斯旺普老師是一個真正的女巫。

She meant business.

她說一不二。

Right away she put them to work.

她讓他們立刻投入學習。

And she loaded them down with homework.

她還給他們留很多家庭作業。

"We ll have no story hour today," said Miss Swamp.

「今天我們要取消講故事的時間！」斯旺普老師說。

"Keep your mouths shut," said Miss Swamp.

「閉上你們的嘴巴！」斯旺普老師說。

"Sit perfectly still," said Miss Swamp.

「給我坐好！」斯旺普老師說。

"And if you misbehave, you ll be sorry," said Miss Swamp.

「你們要是不守紀律的話，可不會好過的！」斯旺普老師說。

The kids in Room 207 had never worked so hard.

207教室的孩子們從沒有像這樣努力學習過。

Days went by and there was no sign of Miss Nelson.

日子一天天過去了，尼爾森老師一點兒消息也沒有。

The kids missed Miss Nelson!

孩子們開始想念尼爾森老師。

"Maybe we should try to find her," they said.

「也許我們該想寫辦法找到她。」他們說。

Some of them went to the police.

一些孩子去了警察局。

Detective McSmogg was assigned to the case.

麥克斯莫格警探負責這個案子。

He listened to their story.

他聽了孩子們的陳述，

He scratched his chin.

撓了撓下巴。

"Hmmmm,"he said,"Hmmm."

「嗯······」他沉吟著，「嗯哼，

"I think Miss Nelson is missing."

Detective McSmogg would not be much help.

麥克斯莫格警探幫不了太大的忙。

Other kids went to Miss Nelson s house.

另外一些孩子去了尼爾森老師的家。

The shades were tightly drawn, and no one answered the door.

窗帘拉得緊緊的，也沒有人來開門。

In fact, the only person they did see was the wicked

Miss Viola Swamp, coming up the street.

——邪惡的薇奧拉·斯旺普老師正從街上走來。「

"If she see us, she ll give us more homework."

They got away just in time.

他們趕緊溜走了。

Maybe something terrible happened to Miss Nelson!

也許尼爾森老師遇到了什麼可怕的事情！

"Maybe she was gobbled up by a shark!" said one of the kids.

「也許她被鯊魚一口吞掉了！」有一個孩子說道。

But that didn t seem likely

不過這似乎不大可能。

"Maybe Miss Nelson went to Mars!" said another kids.

「也許尼爾森老師飛到火星上了！」另外一個孩子說道。

But that didn t seem likely either.

不過似乎也不大可能。

"I know!" exclaimed one know-it-all." Maybe Miss Nelson s

「我知道！」號稱萬事通的孩子大聲宣布，

car was carried off by a swarm of angry butterflies!"

「也許尼爾森老師的汽車被一大群生氣的蝴蝶帶走了！」

But that was the least likely of all.

不過，在所有的猜想中，這最不可能了。

The kids in Room 207 became very discouraged.

207教室的孩子們非常沮喪。

It seemed that Miss Nelson was never coming back.

也許尼爾森老師再也不會回來了。

And they would be stuck with Miss Viola Swamp forever.

他們永遠擺脫不了薇奧拉·斯旺普老師了。

They heard footsteps in the hall.

他們聽到走廊里傳來腳步聲。

"Here comes the witch," they whispered.

「那個女巫來啦。」孩子們悄悄地說著。

"Hello, children," someone said in a sweet voice.

「大家好，孩子們。」一個甜甜的聲音響起來。

It was Miss Nelson!

是尼爾森老師！

"Did you miss me? she asked.

「你們想念我嗎？」她問道。

"We certainly did!" cried all the kids.

「我們當然想啦！」全班的孩子都大聲回答。

"Where were you?"

「您去哪裡啦？」

"That s my little secret," said Miss Nelson.

「這是我的小秘密。」尼爾森老師說。

"How about a story hour?"

「講個故事大家聽嗎？」

"Oh yes!" cried the kids.

「噢，太好了！」孩子們大叫。

Miss Nelson noticed that during story hour no onewas rude or silly.

尼爾森老師注意到，在講故事的時候，既沒有人吵吵鬧鬧，也沒有人走神發獃。

"What brought about this lovely change?" she asked.

「是什麼帶來了這個可喜的變化？」她問道。

"That s our little secret," said the kids.

「這是我們的小秘密。」孩子們回答。

Back home Miss Nelson took off her coat and hung it in the closet(right next to an ugly black dress).

尼爾森老師回到家裡，脫下外套，把衣服掛進衣櫥（剛好掛在一條醜陋的黑色連衣裙旁邊）。

When it was time for bed she sang a little song.

睡覺的時候，她哼起了小曲兒。

"I ll never tell," she said to herself with a smile.

「我絕不能說出真相。」她微笑著自言自語。

P.S.Detective McSmogg is working on a new case.

另外，麥克斯莫格警探開始忙一件新案子。

He is now looking for Miss Viola Swamp.

這會兒，他正在尋找薇奧拉·斯旺普老師。
