16.佛陀與鹿野苑

鹿野苑位於印度北方邦的瓦拉那西，歷史上屬於摩揭陀國。釋迦牟尼成佛後，在這兒初轉法輪。這兒是佛教文化的搖籃，佛教最初的僧團在這兒誕生，真正的傳播也是從這兒開始的。

佛陀把鹿野苑作為自己的第一弘法地，是非常英明的。

一、他的五個僕人在，雖然在修行的過程中鬧過矛盾，但老感情是有的；

二、當地的國王對他有好感。鹿野苑在摩揭陀國，國君是頻婆沙羅王，在佛陀成佛前，他們就是熟人；

三、這兒是一塊風水寶地，環境清幽，民風淳樸。印度教中，許多傳說中的大人物都是在這兒修行，並獲得神通的。

四、此處還有一個對佛陀非常有利的傳說。

上古時代，這兒草木茂盛，氣候宜人，有一群鹿生活在這兒。迦濕國國王常來此狩獵，每次都要斬獲一頭。鹿一天天減少，鹿王很是擔心，擔心它的這一家族會很快從這兒消失。一天，國王又來狩獵，他看上一頭漂亮的白鹿。正當他對著白鹿射擊時，一頭高大威猛的雄鹿從鹿群里沖了出來。它用身子擋住了國王的弓箭。原來那頭白鹿懷有身孕，衝出來擋箭的雄鹿，就是這個鹿群的鹿王。它是佛陀的前世，就是說，佛陀是從這頭鹿王轉世而來的。

國王被這一舉動感動了。他不僅沒有殺死鹿王，還通令王國上下，嚴禁獵鹿。此後，這兒就成了鹿的天堂——鹿野苑。

在當時的印度，佛教能夠超越其他宗教而一枝獨秀，最後成為一種世界性的宗教，絕不是無緣無故的。從濫觴時期，佛陀選擇弘法的地點，就足見佛陀的智慧。
