Just as Halloween is for Americans, the 「Hungry Ghost Festival」 is for Chinese. Ghost Festival is one of Chinese traditional occasions, which is taken very seriously by the Chinese.

就像萬聖節對於美國人一樣，中國也有鬼節。鬼節是中國傳統節日之一，並且被中國人認真看待。

This festival usually falls on the15th day of the 7th month of the lunar calendar. The Ghost Festival, some places say the Hungry Ghost Festival, is also called Half July (Lunar), Ullambana, which is closely related to Buddhism, and zhongyuan jie which is the Taoism saying and Folk Belief.

這個節日通常是陰曆七月十五。鬼節（有些地方翻譯為餓鬼節），又叫七月半，佛教稱之為盂蘭盆節，中元節是道教的稱法，同時也是一種民間說法。

The Ghost Festival is celebrated during the seventh month of the Chinese Lunar calendar. It also falls at the same time as a full moon, the new season, the fall harvest, the peak of Buddhist monastic asceticism, the rebirth of ancestors, and the assembly of the local community.

人們在陰曆七月慶祝鬼節，同時也是月滿之夜，新季節新豐收的日子。這時候正值佛教寺院苦行主義高峰，是先人輪迴，家人團聚的日子。

It is believed by the Chinese that the dead become ghosts roaming between Heaven and Earth unless they have descendants to care for them during the Ghost Festival. During this month, the gates of hell are thrown open to free the hungry ghosts who then wander to seek food on Earth.

中國人認為除非一個人有子孫後代能夠在他死後在鬼節這天悼念他們，否則人死後會變成鬼魂在天地之間遊盪。在七月，地獄的大門會打開放出餓鬼，這些餓鬼會在凡間尋找食物。

Some even think that the ghosts would seek revenge on those who had wronged them in their lives. However, more people remember their ancestors on this day. The Ghost Festival becomes a time for remembering the importance of filial piety. The reason why the Chinese celebrate this festival is to remember their dead family members and pay tribute to them. They also feel that offering food to the deceased appeases them and wards off bad luck.

一些人更認為他們會向那些害死他們的人復仇。但是，更多的人在這一天祭奠他們的先人。鬼節成為一個子女對先人盡孝的節日。中國人慶祝這個節日的原因是紀念他們家中死去的成員並且悼念死者。他們相信祭品能安撫死者，消除厄運。

People now release river lights as an important activity during this time, since it is said that river light can comfort and warm the homeless ghosts. In some areas, visitors may also see small roadside fires, where believes burn paper money and other offerings to appease the restless spirits who have temporarily been released from Hades.

放河燈是人們紀念鬼節的重要活動，因為據說河燈能給無家可歸的孤魂野鬼以慰藉和溫暖。在一些地區，外來者會看見路邊一小堆一小堆的火，因為人們相信燒紙錢或其它東西能安撫剛從地獄出來的痛苦幽魂。

惡鬼索命

Nurse Cheng and his friend Mun were chatting and drinking beer at a bus stop.

Cheng護士和他的朋友Mun在公交站邊喝著啤酒邊聊天。

They had just finished their shift and it was almost midnight.

他們剛剛下班，時間已經將近午夜了。

After they finished their drink, they flung their cans away.

他們喝完啤酒後，把啤酒罐隨意的扔在一邊。

Unfortunately, it was the wrong place to carelessly toss their cans, as they somehow managed to anger a female spirit.

不幸的是，他們扔錯了地方，他們隨意丟棄的啤酒罐惹怒了一個女鬼。

They knew they had done so because they immediately felt like someone was strangling them.

突然他們感覺到有人勒住了他們的脖子，這個時候他們才意識到自己的錯誤。

I saw a female ghost with long hair and in a red dress flying towards us. She tried to strangle us again. I was choking and gasping for air. After we broke free from her grasp, we ran for our lives.

「我看到一個長頭髮穿著紅色衣服的女鬼向我們飄來。她想再次勒住我們。我被勒的喘不過氣。我們努力掙扎擺脫它的束縛後，我們開始逃命。」

Cheng believed that the ghost was at the bus stop and they had unwittingly disturbed her.

As the men ran past a mosque, someone called to them.

當他們跑過一座清真寺時，有路人向他們大喊。

He shouted, "Cepat (quick)", and gestured to the men to run towards him. The men did the sensible thing.

他喊道快跑，然後示意他們向他這邊跑。這兩個人迅速跑向這名路人。

The man then recited a prayer and sprinkled something on Cheng, Munn and the ghost. As soon as he did that, the ghost vaporised into thin air.

然後，這個人默誦了一段經文，並向他們身上（包括女鬼）撒了一些東西，之後這個女鬼就消失的無影無蹤了。

Next, he asked the two men to each give him a RM1 note. He folded the notes into triangles, blessed them, and asked the men to keep the "talisman" on them for safety.

接著，他要求他們兩人每人給他一張紙幣。他把紙幣折成三角形後要求他們把「護身符」放在身上，以確保安全。

"When I reached home, I saw that the ghost had followed me. I called out to my mother to bring me a pail of salt water and splashed it on myself."

「當我到家時，我看到這個女鬼一直跟著我。於是我叫媽媽在我身上潑一桶鹽水。」

"I then quickly changed my clothes, just as the man by the mosque had advised, to prevent the ghost from entering my house and creating more chaos," says Cheng, who has the third eye and has the ability to see ghosts.

「我按照清真寺那個人的說法，馬上換了衣服，以免女鬼進入我的房間再生事端」，Cheng護士說，這名護士有陰陽眼，能夠看到鬼魂。

He then produced the faded ringgit he is still keeping in his wallet to show this writer.

說著他拿出了一直保存在錢包里已經褪色的那沒三角形紙幣。

Cheng said he and his friend were not intoxicated and had not imagined their ghostly encounter as they were both in pain for a week due to the deep scratches on their necks and shoulders.

Cheng護士說，當時他和他的朋友並沒有沒有喝醉，也沒有故意捏造這場撞鬼事件，之後整整一周他和朋友都生活在痛苦之中，因為他們的脖子和肩膀都有深深的劃痕。
