《人生的智慧》是叔本華寫於1850年的晚期著作，正是這本書使叔本華成為享譽世界的哲學家。在這本書中他以「優雅的文體」，從世俗的角度探討了人生應遵循的原則。這本書討論的事情與我們的世俗生活至為接近，諸如健康、財富、名聲、榮譽、養生和待人接物所應遵守的原則等。正如叔本華所說的，在這本書里他盡量以世俗、實用的角度考慮問題。因此，這本書尤其適合大眾閱讀。雖然叔氏盡量放棄了居高俯臨的審視角度，但關於錯綜複雜並因此眾說紛紜的世俗人情的話題，經過這位思想大師一貫深刻而因此透徹的討論之後，變得清晰簡明，話題也幾已窮盡矣。

By a peculiar weakness of human nature, people generally think too much about the opinion which others form of them; although the slightest reflection will show that this opinion, whatever it may be, is not in itself essential to happiness. Therefore it is hard to understand why everybody feels so very pleased when he sees that other people have a good opinion of him, or say anything flattering to his vanity. If you stroke a cat, it will purr; and, as inevitably, if you praise a man, a sweet expression of delight will appear on his face; and even though the praise is a palpable lie, it will be welcome, if the matter is one on which he prides himself.

This is why a high degree of intellect tends to make a man unsocial. True, if quality of intellect could be made up for by quantity, it might be worth while to live even in the great world; but unfortunately, a hundred fools together will not make one wise man.But the individual who stands at the other end of the scale is no sooner free from the pangs of need than he endeavors to get pastime and society at any cost, taking up with the first person he meets, and avoiding nothing so much as himself.

所以，一個人具備了卓越的精神思想就會造成他不喜與人交往。的確，如果社會交往的數量能夠代替質量，那麼，生活在一個熙熙攘攘的世界也就頗為值得的了。但遺憾的是，一百個傻瓜聚在一起，也仍然產生不了一個聰明的人。相比之下，處於痛苦的另一極端的人，一旦匱乏和需求對他的控制稍微放鬆，給他以喘息的機會，他就會不惜代價地尋找消遣和人群，輕易地將就一切麻煩。他這樣做的目的不為別的，只是為了逃避他自己。
