Iran is threatening stability in the Middle East
Tehran』s regional aggression and ballistic missiles programme must be curtailed

Europe and countries of the Arab Gulf sharea common neighbourhood and many common concerns. Both would like to see aMiddle East and north Africa region that is politically stable and economicallyprosperous, where different religions and ethnicities live peacefully side byside, and where human rights and fundamental freedoms are protected andpreserved.
Onecase in point is the nuclear accord with Iran signed in July 2015. Like manyothers, the United Arab Emirates was sceptical, but hoped that the deal, knownformally as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), would encourageIran to moderate its behaviour in the region. Unfortunately, this did nothappen. Instead of mending its ways, Tehran has pursued a narrow sectarianagenda that is threatening the fragile regional social fabric. The long-termconsequences are disastrous.
To fix this problem, we urgently need aconcerted international effort to contain Iran』s brazen regional aggression andcurtail its dangerous ballistic missiles programme. Just as the internationalcommunity pulled together to fix the nuclear issue, we now need ourinternational partners, including the EU, to address this challenge.
Some may argue that this is an unrealisticaspiration, and that regional security issues never were and never should beincluded in discussions of the JCPOA and inevitably would sink the accord. TheUAE disagrees. Without greater progress on these issues, the agreement isdoomed to fail. If we allow Tehran to continue down its current path ofaggression, the accord will lose all its value.
What we need is a new accord that doesthree things: cuts back Tehran』s ability to support extremist groups and sectarianmilitias across the region; diminishes the ability of the Islamic RevolutionaryGuards Corps to bring conflict and destruction to other countries; and limitsTehran』s burgeoning ballistic missile programme to a reasonable level, whilepreventing it from targeting innocent civilians in neighbouring states.Recommended Iran can set a post-Isis security policy for the region Europeannations step up Iran pressure in face of Trump threat Europe calls on Trump tokeep Iran deal alive
These are not unreasonable demands, butrather the basic preconditions of cordial relations and better regionalco-operation. This is why the UAE hopes that the international community canapply itself with as much rigour and determination to addressing Iran』sregional behaviour as it brought to the nuclear issue. European powers, giventheir considerable leverage and experience in steering discussions on thenuclear accord, have much to contribute. We are ready to work with our Europeanpartners to engage in this process in the service of regional peace andstability for all our benefit.
Despite the recent chaos and instability,there are also some reasons for hope, notably the ambitious reform programmeinitiated by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia,the effects of which will be felt throughout the region. If we allow Tehran tocontinue down its current path of aggression, the nuclear accord will lose allits value
These developments deserve the full supportof the international community. The EU should do its best to embrace andencourage these changes. No doubt there will be bumps on the road. But ratherthan remaining focused on narrow policy differences, our European friendsshould look at the bigger picture and grasp this rare moment in favour ofprogress and reform.
Tackling the many challenges in our commonneighbourhood requires close co-operation between Europe and the Arab Gulf. Tosucceed, we need each other. If we work at cross-purposes, we are doomed tofail.
