What is the theme behind this project?

The theme for this current term is Modern Art & AbstractForms and examines artists and movements between 1870 and 1900.

This project enables learners to explore the artists andartworks relating to the theme and explores a wider variety of skills andtechniques. The A level personal investigation coursework enables everyone toexamine the social context of art and refers to the production, display anddifferent understandings of art in context.

Which artists or areas did the student research?

The project begins with a contextual study of theinnovations, events and art of the 1900s, as a method of introducing themes andstyles of the subject theme. Over a series of workshops, CCS students have aninsightful study into the art movements of this time period. Starting withItalian Futurism, artists such as Umberto Boccioni and Giacomo Balla areanalysed. Next, the Dadaist movement shows how new methods of image-making andmix media became a new language amongst artists. Recently, cubism has also beena subject for research. Each student is currently working on an essay thatassesses Pablo Picasso』s Guernica in relation to various contextual themes.

Throughout this term, sketchbooks are used to create dynamicvisual displays of both written and creative responses to artist research.Students need to regularly update and present these sketchbooks, in order todemonstrate the development of ideas, knowledge and skills. In the final stagesof their project, all students are expected to develop and produce a finalcreative outcome that combines all knowledge and skills from the course.

How did they develop their idea?

All students have to pursue a personal outcome in responseto their artist and historical research. There is no restriction on the style, materials or scale of work – they can pursue any art and design specialism. However, learners should select, organise and present work to ensure that theyprovide evidence of meeting all four assessment objectives. Learners must showthey have:

For the purposes of assessment, learners will provideevidence of all the assessment objectives through the careful selection and presentationof their work. A project should be viewed as a whole and judgements regardingthe extent to which all of the assessment objectives have been met will be madeacross the submission as a whole.

In what way is this project particularly successful?

The project allows for an opportunity for detailed researchand analysis of a chosen topic, supported by firm understanding of its place ina broader cultural, historical, social or economic context. All learners willlearn the importance and reasoning why styles and critiques in art transformedfrom observational and representational to abstract and symbolic forms.

Furthermore, this project gives students a valuableopportunity to explore their own creative and intellectual potential. The project has also adopted many disciplinesin art and design, from traditional forms of painting and drawing, to new mediain digital filmmaking. The outcome is the result of a prolonged and reflectiveprocess, while also engaging the viewer.
