成語出處一：最早是金聖嘆評水滸傳時所提出的，包括景陽岡一段連寫十八次「哨棒」，紫石街一段連寫十六次「帘子」和三十八次「笑」，聖嘆說這是"草蛇灰線法"，後來被很多評論家所借用。

成語出處二：《紅樓夢》脂批本，有："事則實事，然亦敘得有間架，有曲折，有順逆，有映帶，有隱有見，有正有閏，以至草蛇灰線、空谷傳聲、一擊兩鳴、明修棧道、暗度陳倉、雲龍霧雨、兩山對峙、烘雲托月、背面敷粉、千皴萬染諸奇。"
