Hello, and welcome to Classic Reading. I』m your host, Jordon. Finally, spring is in the air. The sight of new green grass is a symbol of hope and new life. But sometimes sadness, too. In today』s episode, I』d like to introduce a poem about friendship: 賦得古原草送別, or Grass on the Ancient Plain—Farewell to a Friend, a poem from the Tang dynasty by the poet Bai Juyi.

What a vivid and heartfelt farewell to a friend! The poet Bai Juyi is also known as 「詩王」 or 「the Poetry King.」 First, let』s take a look at the style of his poem.

多麼動人的告別啊！詩人白居易，人稱「詩王」。首先，我們來了解一下這首詩的風格。

Did you notice the two characters in the headline, 「賦得」? It was a common writing style in the imperial examination, or 「科舉考試」 in ancient times. Candidates were asked to use a few given topic words to write a poem. It』s like the 「guided writing」 or 「命題作文」 in your English writing classes today.

你們有沒有注意到，標題中的兩個字「賦得」？它曾是一種常用的書寫文體，常見於中國古代的科舉考試中。考試要求，考生須根據已給出的主題字作詩一首。這很像大家在英語寫作課上的「命題作文」練習。

In the last episode, we learned about the famous translator Xu Yuanchong. He believes that a good poem translation should be beautiful in three ways: in the meaning of the poem, the way it sounds when read out loud and the way it looks on paper.

在上期《致經典》節目中，我們認識了著名翻譯家，許淵沖先生。他認為，一篇好的詩歌譯作，應該從三個層面去展現詩歌的「美」：意美、音美、形美。

Now let』s take a look at Professor Xu』s translation of this classic poem. Try to appreciate its beauty.

Grass on the Ancient Plain—Farewell to a Friend

Wild grasses spread o』er ancient plain;

With spring and fall they come and go.

Fire tries to burn them up in vain;

They rise again when spring winds blow.

Their fragrance overruns the way;

Their green invades the ruined town.

To see my friend going away,

My sorrow grows like grass o』ergrown.

In the first half of the poem, Bai Juyi describes a picture of the grassland. It has lived through cold wind and wildfire. But in the springtime, it comes to life again. The strong vitality of the grass impressed the poet. It』s like the friendship he has with his friend, who comes and goes.

在詩的前半部分，白居易描繪了一片草原的景象。它經受住了寒風和野火的磨練。而到了春天，又現綠草茵茵。小草強勁的生命力讓詩人印象頗為深刻。就像他與往來故人的情誼，如綠草般欣欣向榮。

In the second half of the poem, the wild grass becomes a sad, mixed metaphor. Like the new spring grass that grows everywhere, Bai Juyi is full of sorrow that his dear friend is leaving -- he can taste it in the air, he can feel it in the city -- and he hopes to see him again someday.

在詩的後半部分，小草就被比喻成了一種帶著一絲傷感的景物。故人離去，白居易的傷感，就像這春天漫山遍野的青草般蔓延，在空氣中，隨處可見——他多麼希望能與朋友再相見啊！
