The Invention of Gunpowder

We all know that there were four great inventions in ancient China, and gunpowder was one of them. During the Western Han Dynasty, there was an emperor called the Emperor Wu of Han, who really wanted to live forever. One day, he summoned his civil and military officials, and asked them to think of a way to create pills of immortality for him. There was an alchemist named Li Shaojun, who kowtowed to the emperor and suggested, "Your Majesty, if you take the elixir of life, then you will be able to live forever, longer than the old Immortal." Emperor Wu of Han listened excitedly, and immediately believed the words of Li Shaojun. He ordered all the alchemists in the country to make the pills of immortality for him.

At that time, the main ingredients for alchemy were sulfur, saltpeter, and charcoal. The alchemists were always stationed at the alchemy furnace, and constantly thought about the pills of immortality, but the alchemy furnace could not refine the elixir because it always exploded. Some alchemists even wounded themselves. So, what caused the explosions? When the alchemists put the sulfur, saltpeter and charcoal together in certain proportions, they inadvertently created explosives. Some militarists heard of these explosions and expressed a strong interest in them. They imitated the alchemists』 practices with saltpeter, sulfur, and charcoal, and on the basis of this formula, they made the world"s earliest gunpowder.

火藥的發明

火藥的發明.我們知道，中國古代有四大發明，那火藥呢就是四大發明之一。在我國西漢時期呀，有一個皇帝叫做漢武帝，他很想長命百歲，有一天，他召來了所有的文武大臣，讓他們給自己想辦法，有一個叫李少君的方士，向皇上叩頭，建議說：「陛下如果吃了煉成的仙丹，就一定能夠長生不老，賽過老神仙。」漢武帝一聽，高興極了，馬上相信了李少君的話，他下令全國的方士都行動起來，為他煉製仙丹。

當時啊，煉丹的主要原料是硫磺、硝石和木炭。煉丹的方士們整天守在煉丹爐旁，腦子裡想的都是仙丹，可誰知煉丹爐里不但沒有煉出仙丹，卻經常轟隆隆地發生爆炸，一些方士甚至把自己都炸傷了。那麼是什麼原因造成了爆炸呢？原來呀，當方士們把硫磺、硝石和木炭配成一定的比例時，無意當中就製成了炸藥。一些軍事家聽說了爆炸的事情，對此產生了濃厚的興趣。他們模仿著方士的做法，根據這個配方，將硝石、硫磺、木炭按一定比例配製在一起，這樣就製成了世界上最早的火藥。
