詞源:陽性, protos = primary (Greek) + melas = black (Greek): referring to the presence of the plesiomorphic melanin pattern (Eccles et al., 1989:40).

標本品種:Chromis kirkii Günther, 1894 (original designation).

鑒別：" Small to medium-sized haplochromines endemic to Lake Malawi with moderate size mouths. Melanin pattern based on the plesiomorphic [with vertical barring and horizontal bands] with the longitudinal bands usually predominating. In some species or in some moods, only the mid-lateral band is well developed. The jaws are not greatly elongated and the premaxillary pedicels do not exceed one third of the head length..." (from Eccles et al., 1989:40).
