The Power of Exercise
Introduction
Sion Jair
Sion Jair is heading up the Old Man of Coniston, an 803-metre Lake District fell noted for its sharp ascent and great landscape.
head up = climb up
Lake District:
fell = hill,專門用於指英格蘭北部的山
For Sion, this has become a daily ritual, adopted seven years ago when a visit to the doctor changed his life for ever.
ritual = habit
After tests, Sion learned he had chronic fatigue syndrome. Prior to his diagnosis, he was climbing mountains every single day. But for the first few years, climbing was a challenge.
Sion soon learned that climbing was difficult not because of the mountain itself but because he had also chronic anemia due to a vitamin B12 deficiency. Injections of B12 usually work, but Sion』s body reacted badly to the treatment…
Doctor told him that if he doesn』t have the injections, the most he can expect to live is for three years. Determined not to give in, he set about climbing in earnest, covering around 10 miles a day.
He initially got exhausted from even short walks, but over time, his tolerance increased drastically.
initially = at first
over time = as time went by
drastically = greatly
Nevertheless, the physical effects of the anemia had concealed a severe mental deterioration. During a brain scan, Sion learned his brain had shrunk. Doctors told him he had Alzheimer』s.
conceal = hide
shrink: decrease in size
Although the disease had gone past the early stages, Sion』s response was typical of him: he walked even more. Not just the Old Man, but other fells, too.
Sion has heard all sorts of advice like testing yourself mentally, doing sudoku and crossword puzzles. Butthathasn』t worked for him. This only led Sion back to the mountain, where he could remember events that took place 50 years ago.
Sion says that climbing helped him to clear his head and get a better perspective on things.
He navigates without GPS, and knows nearly every rock and slope, a skill he is keen to pass on before it』s too late.
be keen to do sth. = want to do sth. very much
Using his own savings, Sion has developed a course for walkers of all ages. He won』t make abeanout of this. Half the fee will cover the travel and printing costs. The other half will go to three charities — Mountain Rescue, the Great North Air Ambulance and the Alzheimer』s Society.
Sion is now still thriving at 68-years-old. He firmly believes that vigorous exercise is highly beneficial for Alzheimer』s disease.
thrive: successful, strong, healthy …,口語中一般用do well
