GIF

(Re)working London: An exhibition about living with industry

Egret West

Studio Egret West, the designers behind some of the UK』s most transformative urban frameworks, are hosting an exhibition about the future of London living with industry. The new London Plan has recently opened the debate about how industry should be integrated with the city; this is an opportunity to create a new identity for very large, previously hidden areas of London dominated by low density, monocultural industrial use. Our exhibition looks into the possibilities for this identity, focusing on some of the Studio』s recent works.

Suburban Identities

Croydon has long been associated with the monotony of suburban life; an ordinary place on the edge of London where houses are affordable and families grow up. But these identities are changing, as living in the central boroughs of London is now so dramatically unaffordable for the vast majority of the city』s population.

The suburbs, and Croydon, in particular present a real opportunity to tackle the city』s acute housing shortage by carefully managing the densification of these places in a way that is true to their character and affordability, whilst making them more diverse and vibrant places to live and work.

The Treehouse at Battersea Power Station

The Treehouse is designed and crafted by members of London practice Studio Kyson."Treehouse" takes residency in Nine Elms for every day throughout June. It is a place of contrasts, a space in which to explore, to play, or simply take a moment to reflect. The Treehouse is a pavilion for everyone to experience architecture, and offers a new perspective on the individual, city and identity.

Architecturally, the Treehouse is an abstract take on a traditional concept. Its material palette of charred timber (Shou Sugi Ban) and smoked mirrors, explores the principles of form, light and texture. The Treehouse expresses these with a series of contrasts; solid and void, dark and light, rough and smooth. A nomadic pavilion, the reflections in the smoked mirrored exterior mean the Treehouse is immediately embedded in its new context.

The piece premiered at Palais de Tokyo in Paris and recently at the opening of the newly refurbished Royal Academy.

Next Generation Design Pavilion

Every year Scale Rule』s Next Generation Design Pavilion aims to inspire a younger generation to work in construction-related professions. The pavilion is a result of a series of educational workshops led by volunteer industry professionals, bringing GCSE students together from across London.

For the third consecutive year, Scale Rule will be giving St. James』 Churchyard a new focal point by realising a pavilion design conceived by GCSE students from around London. This year』s winning concept responded to the theme of identity by proposing a sensitive metaphor: layers representing past, present and future will create a kaleidoscopic oculus, inviting visitors to take a moment to direct their eyes up and become more aware of key natural elements around them.

Serpentine Pavilions 2009-2018

The Serpentine Gallery in London has commissioned internationally known architects to design a summer Pavilion since 2000. The Pavilions provide a shelter for summer events, among others, film, dance, music, poetry, and contemporary art.The architectural program of Serpentine Galleries takes place in June each year and lasts for 3 months.

Zaha Hadid designed the first pavilion followed by Daniel Libeskind & Cecil Balmond,Toyo Ito & Cecil Balmond, Oscar Niemeyer, álvaro Siza & Eduardo Souto de Moura & Cecil Balmond, Rem Koolhaas & Cecil Balmond & Arup, Olafur Eliasson & Kjetil Thorsen & Cecil Balmond, Frank Gehry, SANAA, Jean Nouvel, Peter Zumthor & Piet Oudolf, Herzog & de Meuron & Ai Weiwei, Sou Fujimoto, Smiljan Radi?, SelgasCano, Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), Diébédo Francis Kéré.

Danica O. Kus has been documenting Serpentine Pavilions since 2009. In her photography work, she illustrates the uniqueness of each Pavilion, the new architecture, and design that people can experience. Inspired by their high aesthetics and technological achievements she explores the created atmosphere of the space, the connection to nature within the park and connection to their visitors.

Architect Frida Escobedo, celebrated for dynamic projects that reactivate urban space, has been commissioned to design the Serpentine Pavilion 2018. Harnessing a subtle interplay of light, water and geometry, her atmospheric courtyard-based design draws on both the domestic architecture of Mexico and British materials and history, specifically the Prime Meridian line at London』s Royal Observatory in Greenwich.

Benches

The London Festival of Architecture has unveiled a series of new one-off public benches, designed by emerging architects and designers. Across the Thames, a further bench has been installed outside London Bridge station in partnership with Team London Bridge, at the heart of another of the festival』s 2018 focus areas.

Architecture and design students, recent graduates and emerging practices from across London were invited to submit a bench design to enliven the city』s public realm. The new benches showcase London』s brilliant emerging architects and designers, and are a public gift that help the City remain an exceptional place to live, work and visit.

Building Site

The art installation BUILDING SITE questions the changing ownership of public space in London and invites the public to reflect on the consequences that urbanisation causes to local communities and natural ecosystems. The artwork occupies a significant piece of public land to create a new "building site" - a signature mark for London in transition.

The installation is inspired by London"s identity and has a strong poetic narrative deriving from Lithuanian culture that tightly links human existence to the one of nature. Fenced off with construction site hoarding, the BUILDING SITE changes the way people normally move and perceive the Carter Lane Gardens. Meanwhile, it offers a mysterious infinite forest-like experience for those who claim their right to open the doors and enter.

Connections

In 2018 the UK appointed a Minister for Loneliness. With 14 million inhabitants, London is a complex web of communities and cultures interwoven in often invisible ways. Sometimes the loneliest place to be is in a crowd.

The 「Connections」 project welcomes all to visit the pavilion in Granby Place where they can either soak up the spirit of community, attend one of the many free events that will be hosted there, or simply enjoy the space to eat their lunch on the tables and chairs provided.

Between June 14th and June 30th a series of free for all activities will be programmed in the space, curated with the intention of connecting a diverse cross-section of Londoners in unexpected ways, from acoustic performances, drawing workshops to swap shops.

G-tainer Installation

This exciting and pioneering venture is a collaboration between G-SMATT Europe, London Festival of Architecture, the Royal Exchange and selected other partners to display the latest technological innovations in 『Smart Glass』 and 『Digital Media Facades』 in an accessible and public forum. The proposal is to instigate a month long project consisting of placing a single story G-Glass structure, displaying associated media content to coincide with other LFA activity around Bank Junction. This temporary installation will provide a focus point and will display specially designed video media across the surface. This will enable stakeholders to use both the internal space and display promotional, artistic and engaging content to draw interest and communicate with those viewing externally.
