北京故宮博物院建立於1925年10月10日，是在明朝、清朝兩代皇宮及其收藏的基礎上建立起來的中國綜合性博物館，也是中國最大的古代文化藝術博物館，其文物收藏主要來源於清代宮中舊藏。其位於北京市中心，1961年，故宮被定為全國第一批重點文物保護單位。1987年，故宮被聯合國教科文組織列入「世界文化遺產」名錄。
