War is a horrible thing, so we should avoid it at all costs. Human beings have been fighting one another since the beginning of time. They fight over various things, from religion to money. There are no winners in a war, because in the end, many people on both sides end up dying. During times of war, people lose their homes, jobs, and their families are broken. The only way for any country to win a war is not to fight at all. Peace is the only answer.

戰爭是件可怕的事，因此我們應不計一切來避免戰爭。自古以來，人類就互相爭鬥。他們會為各種事情爭鬥，從宗教到錢財都包括在內。戰爭中沒有贏家，因為到頭來雙方都有許多人死亡收場。戰爭期間，大家失去家園及工作，他們的家庭也破碎了。任何一個國家要贏得戰爭，唯一的方法就是根本不要參戰。和平是唯一的解決之道。

語法重點：

1. Human beings have been fighting one another since the beginning of time.

自古以來，人類就互相爭鬥。

本句中劃線的 since 是介詞，表「自從」，之後接各詞片語the beginning of time（時間的開端）作賓語，形成副詞短語。此類短語在句中出現時，主句的動詞應采現在完成時（have / has + 過去分詞）或現在完成進行時（have/ has + been + 現在分詞）。

例：I have been waiting here since 6 PM. Two hours have passed, and my girl friend hasn"t shown up yet.

我從下午六點就一直在這兒等著。兩個小時都過去了，而我女友尚未現身。

2. since 亦可作副詞連詞，亦表「自從」，之後引導過去時副詞從句，修飾主句，主句的動詞亦應采現在完成時或現在完成進行時。

例：I have enjoyed music ever since I was a little girl.
