「十二生肖」,也稱「十二屬相」,是我國民間計算年齡的方法,即在「子、丑、寅、卯、辰、巳、午、未、申、酉、戌、亥」十二個地支符號上,各配一個相應的動物名稱——鼠、牛、虎、兔、龍、蛇、馬、羊、猴、雞、狗、豬,這樣就組成了十二屬相。那麼,十二生肖又是怎麼來的呢?有人認為,它是古代華夏族的紀年法與少數民族紀年法融合的結果。十二生肖作為一種民俗文化,千百年來深深植根於社會生活的各個角落。比如,以十二生肖為題材的「花錢」種類就十分豐富。

花錢,屬於民俗錢。民俗錢相傳起於兩漢,是民間為追求辟邪、吉利等一些特殊用途所鑄的錢,並不進入流通流域。明清兩代是花錢的鼎盛時期,總體存量極少,是個人佩戴和投資收藏的佳品。
