1911年辛亥革命武昌起義後，黎元洪被革命黨人推為湖北軍政鄂軍都督。南京臨時政府成立後，當選中華民國副總統。1916年6月黎元洪在袁世凱死後繼任大總統，恢復約法，召集國會。當時的武昌造幣廠鑄制了黎元洪像開國紀念銀幣。分為黎元洪戴軍帽像和黎元洪免冠版鑄兩種。鑄幣造型與刻工，均借鑒了孫中山開國紀念幣的例子。但在當時流通時間短，範圍亦不廣，大都遭回爐或被人收藏，成了真正意義上的紀念幣。
