學了這麼多年英語，「晚飯」到底是 dinner，還是 supper？

學了這麼多年英語，查字典看到supper 和dinner的意思都是晚飯的意思，到底有什麼區別呢？還是有區別的。

Dinner 這個詞本意是正餐，比較主要的，比較豐盛的一餐。這個詞本身不包含時間的概念，「豐盛」是關鍵。所以，你可以中午吃這個dinner，你也可以晚上吃這個dinner。而在 dinner 這個詞最開始使用的時候，在實際的生活中外國人也是這麼用的。特別是在18，19世紀國外的農村，經常在中午吃 dinner，因為吃飽了飯下午好繼續幹活。原則上講，你要是想在早上吃 dinner 也沒有人攔著你，只是要注意減肥。

The word dinner does not necessarily imply the time of day. Depending on where you are, it may mean the midday meal or the evening meal, but it always refers to the main meal of the day.

相比之下，supper 這個詞，是真正的「晚」餐的意思。這個 supper 是專門指晚上或者晚上睡覺前吃的比較量少的一餐。這是真資格的晚餐。注意「晚上」和「量少」是關鍵。

但是，這個真資格的晚餐 supper 在語言的發展中敗給了 dinner。原因之一是人們在農村從事重體力勞動的需要越來越少了，dinner 因量足是為了吃飽飯幹活的意義越來越淡化了，而dinner豐盛的意義越來越突出，全家人晚上相聚的需求越來越多，對晚餐的要求越來越高。說白了，是「量少」敗給了「豐盛」，憑什麼晚上那頓就要少吃呢？全家人在一起還不大吃大喝一頓？雖然從醫學上講，晚上少吃點有助身體健康。但是，大家要是都聽了醫生的話，這生活還有什麼樂趣？

Google(谷歌)對這幾個詞的使用頻率做了調查，

從上圖你可以看出 dinner （最高那根線）的使用頻率越來越高，而 supper （最低那根線）的使用頻率自1900年以來越來越低。現在在美國，我很少聽到有人把晚飯叫做 supper，基本都用 dinner 代替了。

也就是說，從十八世紀一開始，Dinner主要是指午餐，其用餐時間可早至上午九點或十點。在法國，Dinner的時間從下午兩三點慢慢推遲到六點或更晚。

所以，當你中午在某地吃著豐盛的午餐的時候，其實你是在吃Dinner。

二、Supper

接下來我們來看看柯林斯和牛津英語詞典對Supper的定義：

牛津英語詞典：An evening meal, typically a light or informal one.

柯林斯英語詞典：Some people refer to the main meal eaten in the early part of the evening as supper.

由此可以看出，Supper才是「晚飯」的正解。

需要注意的是，柯林斯英語詞典對Supper還給出了這樣的解釋：

Supper is a simple meal eaten just before you go to bed at night.

這就相當於我們睡覺前吃的「夜宵」，睡前小食。

然而，Dinner與Supper的區別不僅僅是在其所食不同，它們也存在地域使用差異。比如，在美國，更為常用的是Dinner，而在加拿大，更為常用的卻是Supper。
